RDI UzEngineering and the Fulbright Program held mining industry training sessions
In the context of UzEngineering's ongoing collaboration with the Fulbright Program, we were honored to welcome Professor Sukumar Bandopadhyay, an esteemed expert in the field of mining from the United States of America.
Sukumar Bandopadhyay is a Doctor of Sciences in Mining Engineering and Professor Emeritus at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He has gained considerable professional experience and has been the recipient of a number of international awards.
On November 12, 2024, an important meeting was held at RDI UzEngineering's office with representatives of the American Embassy and the Fulbright Program. The meeting's purpose was to discuss key directions of joint cooperation. The meeting was attended by representatives from UzEngineering, including members of the management team, as well as Professor Sukumar Bandopadhyay from the USA, who is a specialist in Mining Engineering. Also present were Harris Lipscomb, who is the Public Diplomacy Officer at the U.S Embassy, and Muhlisa Rasulova, the U.S. Embassy Professional Exchanges Coordinator. This meeting is part of the signed agreement that aims to facilitate the arrival of an American specialist to exchange experience and improve knowledge, with the goal of contributing to the development of the mining industry in Uzbekistan.
The program for the visit of the American expert included a series of training and seminar activities for specialists, students, and teaching staff of technical educational institutions. These activities were designed with the objective of introducing state-of-the-art technologies and process improvement in the mining industry.
In the context of our ongoing collaboration with various educational institutions we have had the privilege of organizing a series of lectures and training sessions for students and faculty members at a number of distinguished educational establishments from November 13th to the 26th, including: Turin Polytechnic University, Tashkent State Technical University, and the Almalyk branch of Tashkent State Technical University.
In the course of lectures and trainings, the expert discussed such topics as:
-
“Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the mining industry”
-
“Engineering education in the 21st century”
-
“Automation of Drilling and Blasting works in Canadian Coal Mines”
-
“Safety of mining works”
-
“Mine closure, sustainable development and Corporate Social Responsibility: a new paradigm in mine planning”
-
“Fundamentals of U.S. Mining and Mining Practices”
-
“Corporate Social Responsibility”
Students were encouraged to participate in the discussion, and they were grateful to receive a lot of useful advice and answers to numerous questions.
Meetings were also held with the teaching staff of the universities, where we had the opportunity to discuss current issues regarding the curriculum and potential avenues for future collaboration.
These training programs laid the foundation for the development of highly skilled professionals who will be well-equipped to excel in the dynamic environment of the modern mining industry. Additionally, they will be able to consider social and ecological aspects when designing and operating mines, which is a valuable quality in today's context.
Additionally, on November 27, a specialized training session was conducted for RDI UzEngineering specialists and invited mining specialists on the topic of "Challenges and future of the mining industry." This event provided an opportunity for participants to gain deeper insights into the current trends, challenges, and opportunities facing the global mining industry. The training covered new approaches to improving production processes and some innovative solutions that could potentially transform the industry in the future.
On November 28, 2024, a training session was held for specialists of the Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Complex (AMMC). The topic of the training was "Mining Industry 4.0: Increasing Production and Productivity". During the training, participants were introduced to a number of advanced technologies and methods that have the potential to increase the productivity and efficiency of mining processes. The use of smart technologies and automated systems is becoming an integral part of the modern mining industry. This training was an important step towards the introduction of such technologies in Uzbekistan.
Cooperation with the FULBRIGHT program represents a unique opportunity to establish close cooperation with international partners in the field of education and science.
We are pleased to report that the training sessions for teaching staff and students have been a valuable opportunity to enhance the professional knowledge and practical skills of our future specialists. It would be beneficial to consider training in mining safety and sustainable development of mining enterprises as a way of potentially improving safety and efficiency of work in the industry. It would be remiss of us not to mention the topic of corporate social responsibility, which is also a highly relevant issue in the current climate. Companies must consider not only the economic benefits they bring, but also the impact they have on the environment and local communities.
The final meeting between the management of RDI UzEngineering and Professor Sukumar Bandopadhyay marked the conclusion of this intensive training cycle. As a gesture of appreciation and a symbol of the growing friendship and partnership between Uzbekistan and the United States, the participants of the meeting exchanged gifts from their respective countries.
We are pleased to report that these activities have contributed to the advancement of professional knowledge among specialists and lecturers, while also facilitating the deepening of cultural ties between the two countries.
